The fisheries programme of CPP monitored bi-weekly permanent and seasonal floodplains over the period 1992-2000

The monitoring programme consisted of:

  • A traditional catch and effort programme in each site
  • Analysis of the data with GIS

Fisheries monitoring sites

MAJOR RESULTS

  • No impact of the project on fisheries, this as controlled flooding regulates only peak water levels and no changes in average monthly flooded areas can be detected
  • Average catch permanent floodplains 160 kg/ha/year or a net benefit of 300 US/ha/year
  • Average catch seasonal floodplains 85 kg/ha/year or a net benefit of 140 US/ha/year
  • Permanent floodplains have the highest economic return if left undisturbed. Transforming them into paddy fields results in a lower economic and financial return.
  • The catch is highly related to the extent of flooding. A floodpulse was found in catch and effort data as well in the length based fish stock assessment data
  • The major driving force behind fish catch is fishing effort, which has major consequences for management
